The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has challenged to compete with militaries in the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) countries in international gun-shooting competitions.

Deputy MDF Commander Lieutenant General John Msonthi declared this on Friday when he presented prizes to winners in this year’s inter-unit shooting competition held at Kamuzu Barrack in Lilongwe.

“It is our plan to compete with other Sadc countries. I am glad that female soldiers took part in the competition. International shooting competitions we are aiming for also require involvement of female soldiers,” said Msonthi.

He said the expertise his soldiers have demonstrated in the week-long competition shows that MDF has greatly improved its capacity to fire guns.

“Being a good firer is not only for competition purposes, a good soldier needs to be a complete firer, able to fire desired shots and be conversant with rifle handling,” he advised the soldiers.

Mvera Combat Battalion emerged overall winner after gunning down soldiers from the headquarters and the entire military that included the navy, airborne and land soldiers.

Kamuzu Barracks capitulated and handed over the cup to their fellow uniformed colleagues from Mvera.

Other best performing units included Parachute Battalion, Zomba Airbase and Malawi Armed Forces College (Mafco).
