MDF games budget at K18 million

Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has announced that the budget for the inter unit sports taking place at the Malawi Armed Forces College (Mafco) in Salima is at K18 million (US$40 000).
In briefing journalists on Wednesday, director of training at MDF Brigadier General Paul Phiri said the budget covers transport, accommodation and food for over 500 athletes that have gathered at Mafco.
Phiri has since thanked Old Mutual for contributing K1.5 million (US$3 333) towards prize money and Toyota Malawi for injecting K500 000 (US$1 111).

“Old Mutual and Toyota Malawi came in to assist. We also have received contributions in cash and kind from numerous individuals and organisations. The Inter Unit Sports Festivals is part of the annual physical training for men and women within MDF,” said Phiri.
In football, Cobbe Barracks beat Moyale 3-1 to reach the semi-finals whereas Engineering Battalion lost to Zomba Administration 7-4 in post-match penalty shoot-outs.
As we went to press Kamuzu Barracks (KB) were playing Changalume Barracks in the quarter-finals while Marine Unit were playing Chilumba Barracks to decide the other two teams to reach the semi-finals.
In field and track events, Mafco striker Richard Mbulo won the 100 metres category.
In tug of war, Zomba AirBase lost to Lilongwe Admin, KB managed to pull through Support Battalion.
In netball, Zomba Administration defeated Lilongwe Admin 29-17 to progress to the semi-finals.
The games are going on and the finals will be played on Friday, according to the programme.
