The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Inter- service marksmanship competition began on Tuesday in Lilongwe with Army Commander General Ignacio’s Maulana present to inspire the soldiers.
The precision shooting competition has brought together members from all military units in the country at Kamuzu Barracks range where they will compete for four days using different ranges from a variety of riffles, according to chief of training, Brigadier General Alick Mhone.
Speaking on behalf of the Army commander, Mhone said the rifle match is an opportunity for service members to compete in stiff contest and to build camaraderie among one another.
The competition will feature eight members from each of the 14 units and the firing ranges from 200-1000 yards. The shooting is done from a variety of poses including seated, kneeling and standing just to test service members in their proficiency in shooting.
“This is an annual competition among all Army units. The event is one of the most important activities on our calendar as directorate of training. Shooting is the core of the military and have these competitions to sharpen shooting skills. We also build teamwork and a spirit of camaraderie through this competition,” said Mhone.
Changalume Barracks, Airborne, Mafco, Support Battalion, Engineering Battalions, Malawi Rifles 1,2,3, Airwing, Marine Unit, Lilongwe Admin and Zomba Admin are the units taking part in the tournament.
According to Mhone, the winners will receive trophies and also monetary prizes at the end of the competition on Friday.
