Addressing golfers and other guests, Chakwera said it is important for the country to start appreciating the important role that war veterans played for the peace that is currently being enjoyed.

He said: “As Malawians, we must learn to show appreciation for the selfless services the veteran soldiers rendered to the nation.

“Today, Malawi is enjoying peace and progress in development because of the sacrifices the men made. It is the nation’s civil duty to show compassion.”

The president also thanked the corporate world and the golfers for patronising and contributing financially towards the charity golf.

Speaking earlier, Chilima also hailed the ex-service men for sacrificing their lives for Malawi.

On his part, Phiri thanked Chakwera for gracing the event.

He said: “We are really honoured with your presence and its shows the high esteem government has for the war veterans. We are also grateful to companies that have contributed towards sponsoring teams and also NBS Bank plc in particular for being a true friend to MDF. Through this huge financial contribution, NBS has shown that the bank has the welfare of our veterans at heart.”

NBS Bank plc board chairperson Vizenge Kumwenda said the contribution was the bank’s reaffirmation and commitment to support the veterans and serving officers.

On the golf course, team Nocma emerged the winner out of the 25 teams that participated.
