Executive Secretary for the Islamite Munazzamat al-Dawa al-Islamia (MDI) Jassim Zachariah Msosa says supporting needy students in their academic endeavours can boost the quality of education in the country.

Msosa made the remarks in Zomba on Friday when his organisation distributed clothes, maize, sugar, salt, cooking oil, stationery and school fees and pocket money to learners to purchase groceries for the 2015/2016 academic year.

Msosa said most students fail examinations because they lack basic needs which affect their performance.

He said when a student goes to school on an empty stomach and in dirty clothes he or she easily loses concentration in class as hunger and poverty psychologically affect them.

“Most students get frustrated in school if they lack other basic needs, a situation that forces them to indulge in deviant behaviour such as prostitution and drug and substance abuse that ruins their futures,” he said.

Primary education advisor (Pea) for Likangala Zone in Zomba, Raphael Mulaphe, acknowledged the good role that religious institutions play in the country’s education sector.

“We are quite assured that these resources will promote quality education among these students,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of other beneficiaries, Ibrahim Mpombera, advised his fellow students to work hard in school to benefit from the assistance. n
