Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) acting chief elections officer Thandie Nkovole died yesterday after collapsing in her office in Blantyre.
MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said Nkovole collapsed at around 3pm and was rushed to Mwaiwathu Private Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Said Mwafulirwa: “It is true she has passed on today at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital. She came to work and attended some meetings at the office. She collapsed at the office and was taken to Mwaiwathu Private Hospital where she was pronounced dead.”
He said they have lost a very hard-working person who was dedicated to her job.
“We will miss her, she was the only lady director at MEC, very dedicated to her job and a hard worker,” Mwafulirwa added.
He said the funeral programme will be released today after consultations with family members.
Nkovole joined the electoral body in 2002 as director of civic and voter education.
She was appointed acting deputy chief elections officer in August 2016 and rose to her latest position in March this year.
