MEC launches Dec 22 Mchinji by-elections

 

 

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on Sunday launched activities in readiness for by-elections at Mtope Ward in Mchinji West Constituency slated for December 22 2015.

The by-election in the ward follows the death of the former ward councillor John Msumatiza (Malawi Congress Party-MCP) who died on July 26 this year.

Speaking during stakeholders’ by-election calendar of events launch at Mtope, MEC commissioner the Reverend Emmanuel Chinkwita-Phiri called on political parties participating in the elections to desist from violence during the campaign and election day.

He said: “We want this by-election to be peaceful and orderly, people should respect the laws because any violation of the electoral law carries a maximum penalty of K500 000 and imprisonment.”

Chimkwita-Phiri also urged the political parties to provide party monitors who understand the electoral procedures to avoid conflicts with presiding officers during registration and polling day.

He called on officers who will be conducting the elections not to favour any candidates, but be neutral when discharging their duties.

The meeting was attended by members of political parties such as governing Democratic Party (DPP), opposition MCP and People’s Party (PP), religious and traditional leaders, among others.
