MEC suspends voters’ roll inspection

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has suspended the voters’ roll inspection which started on Monday, March 24 2014, due to what it called logistical and other challenges.

MEC chief elections officer Willie Kalonga made the announcement in a statement yesterday.

Reads the statement in part: “The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) regrets to advise that due to logistical challenges and inadequacies in the preliminary voters’ roll, it has decided to suspend voters’ roll inspection exercise. This means [that] all centres that had opened will be closed. The commission will soon announce when the exercise will resume.”

MEC planned that the exercise be done in two phases; the first one from March 24 to March 28 and the second one from April 1 to April 5 2014.

During the period, registered voters were expected to inspect their names, pictures and other registration details on the voters’ roll.
