MEC takes ‘Say No To Violence’ campaign to Thyolo
Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) will today launch its ‘Clean Campaign; Say No To Violence’ campaign at Goliati Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chimaliro in Thyolo.
A press statement from MEC indicates that the commission will host a mass rally at Golitati school ground at around one o’clock to educate the public on the need for a violence-free campaign in view of the 2014.
The mass rally, according to MEC, will target all traditional leaders, political parties, candidates, civil society organisations and the general public.
Goliati has turned to be a symbol of political violence after two people—Cassim Julius, a police officer, and Aaron Sawerengera, a civilian—were murdered in cold blood at a political rally held by President Joyce Banda in the area on March 16, 2014.
The killing of the two was succeeded by a spate of violent activities including the beating of Peter Mutharika personal assistant Ben Phiri at Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre.
Political parties have since pledged to conduct violence- free campaign.
MEC cannot investigate Goliati violence as it happened before start of official campaign period. In any case the meeting was not a campaign meeting but a “DEVELOPMENT rally”
