MEC turns down PP, UDF, Depeco candidates in Dowa

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has rejected nomination papers of some aspiring candidates in Dowa.

  The aspirants include Steven Chingondo (People’s Party-PP) and Florence Banda (Democratic People’s Congress-Depeco) who were rejected for failing to pay nomination fees.

MEC also turned down aspiring councillors Regina Chunga (United Democratic Front-UDF) and Steven Chidothi (PP).      

Chunga was rejected for being an unregistered voter while Chidothi failed to pay nomination fees.

Meanwhile, 47 parliamentary candidates, out of whom 21 are independent candidates, are competing for seven constituencies in the district while 75 aspiring councillors are fighting for 14 wards, according to MEC.

There are 13 female parliamentary aspirants against 34 males.

Other parties fielding candidates include the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM.
