Medical assistant arrested over drugs

Police in Dedza are keeping in custody a 49 year old man for allegedly stealing medical drugs and supplies amounting to over K200 000 from Chikuse Health Centre in the district where he was working as a medical assistant.

According to Dedza deputy police publicist Cassim Manda, the suspect, Gabriel Chinkonda, was arrested on Saturday after police apprehended a motorbike tax operator transporting the drugs.

“Upon interrogation, the tax operator revealed that the medical drugs which included Ethromycin as well as supplies like gloves and goose rolls belonged to the medical assistant,” said Manda.

Manda said Chinkonda is expected to appear before court soon to answer the charge of theft by public servant.
Chinkonda hails from Chitala village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Khombedza in Salima.
