Malawi Environmental Endowment Trust (Meet) has sponsored a two-day K500 000 basketball bonanza at Blantyre Youth Centre next weekend.

According to Meet finance and administration manager Rodrick Kamoto, the purpose of their sponsorship is to sensitise the youth to the importance of preserving the environment as they commemorate the World Environmental Week that begins on June 2.

“We would like to use basketball as a tool for encouraging the youth to take part in the global fight against behaviours and activities that negatively impact the environment,” said Kamoto about the competition, which will be conducted under the theme: Small Countries and Climate Change.

While thanking Meet for the sponsorship, Southern Region Basketball League (Sozobal) publicist Kondwani Kabowa urged all the men’s and women’s basketball teams to register for the competition, which will take place at the Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) and Polytechnic.

“Interested Sozobal teams should each pay K5 000 registration fee by Friday to participate,” Kabowa said.

The Sozobal spokesperson said winners in the men’s category will get K50 000 prize while runners-up and third-placed outfit will receive K30 000 and K20 000, respectively.

He said women’s champions will receive K40 000 whereas second and third-placed will get K25 000 and K10 000 prize, respectively.
