Merrick carries NBS Bank golf day

Two birdies and nine pars on the wet Country Club Limbe (CCL) greens were enough to make Charles Merrick this year’s first NBS Bank Monthly Mug champion.

Playing off handicap eight, Merrick on Saturday cast out his swing demons on time to make some splendid iron shots that helped him accumulate net 71 and earn an early qualification into the 2013 NBS Bank Winner of Winners Championships alongside his runner-up Gabriel Kambale and third-placed Bilal Raidan (both net 72).

He explained that although a field of 88 golfers was quite intimidating, the dread of missing qualification into the grand annual contest for the second time in a row fired him up.

“Since 2006, I have always been making it into the Winner of Winners contest until last year when I failed to be among the best three players in each of the 2012’s Monthly Mugs.

“I am now quite relieved that I have managed to fend-off my misfortune this early,” said Merrick after receiving a mug and a Logik Fan Box from NBS Bank marketing officer Lilian Kawaza.

Chris Moultby also had a fair share of joy during this medal formatted competition as he went home K26 000 richer after accomplishing two 2-clubs on the day. Cassim Aaron received K13 000 for having a single two-club.

CCL golf captain Ronwell Malikita, who announced the winners, thanked the bank for continuing to sponsor golf in these hard economic times,

On her part Kawaza said they are proud to be associated with the gentleman’s game.

“As a caring bank, it feels good to be back with golf sponsorship in 2013. Expect more goodies from us this year,” she told the golfers.
