Candidate Master (CM) Petros ‘Razorblade’ Mfune was all smiles on Saturday afternoon when he won a live goat in a Blitz Chess Tournament at Wakawaka Entertainment Centre in Lilongwe.

Dubbed Yazman Mbuzi Ipite Chess Tournament, the competition was sponsored by Lilongwe-based chess player Mark Ndipita, who also offered a crate of minerals and a chicken for the second and third positions, respectively.

Mfune won the top prize after accumulating 11 out of 13 points in the all-play all tournament, which attracted 14 players. He expressed gratitude to Ndipita for sponsoring the tournament.

“I thank Mr. Ndipita for sponsoring this tournament. I know everyone wanted to go home with the goat, but there had to be one winner and it is CM Petros Mfune,” said the champion after getting his prize.

The crate of minerals was won by Aaron Phiri, who also had 11 points but lost it out in the Sonnerborn-berger tie breaking system.

CM Alfred Chimthere got the chicken after finishing third with the same number of points while Olympiad player George Mwale came fourth.

Ndipita said he sponsored the tournament to bring together chess players from Central Region in a more social environment.

“Throughout the year, players have been involved in more serious tournaments, where noise was prohibited. I wanted to bring the family together in a social environment the way other disciplines like football, pool, volleyball do,” he said.

This is the second successive time for Mfune to win a live goat after coming out top in a similar tournament sponsored by Central Region Chess League a couple of months ago.
