Mhango, Mbewe shine at African Junior Chess qualifiers

Adrian Mhango and Ulemu Mbewe on Sunday became national junior chess champions at a contest held at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe.

Mhango and Mbewe, who contested in the boys and girls categories respectively, represented the Northern Region. Both won four matches each and drew once to amass 4.5 points.

For winning the national championship, they have made it into the list of Malawi flag carriers at the 2014 African Juinior Chess Championship in Angola this December.

Mhango will lead his runner-up Stain Phiri, from the Central Region, at the continental showpiece. Phiri secured the place after completing his fixtures on four points.

In the girls’ section, Mbewe will be the country’s ambassador along with her first runner-up Judith Phiri from the Centre and third runner-up Annie Simwawa of Mzuzu, who scored 3.5 points.

The Africa Junior Chess Championship will take place in Angola from December 1-7 2014.
