Northern Region Volleyball League (NRVL) has said it will host this year’s K2.5 million Jappie Mhango Men’s Volleyball Tournament qualifiers at Mzimba Community Ground and Amagents Sports Centre in Rumphi.

NRVL chairperson Kafumu Nkhoma said they need to develop the game in other places apart from Mzuzu.

“We want the sport to be played by many even in districts. That is why we have scheduled the men’s qualifying games in Mzimba and Rumphi. This will help to develop talent for the national team,” he said.

Nkhoma said the top-four teams from each group will qualify for the finals to be held at Katoto Secondary School court in Mzuzu during the weekend of  October 26-27.

The tournament has been divided in two groups—Pool A and B.

Pool A, which has seven teams, namely Troopers, Eagles Claws, Mzuni, Katoto, Mzimba, MIA and Raiply, will play in Mzimba while  Pool B comprising Moyale, Chibavi, Rafiki, Ekwendeni, Karonga, Amagents and Chilumba, will play at Amagents in Rumphi.

However, NRVL has not disclosed the prizes for the winners in the competition, but last year’s champions Moyale Troupers in the men’s category and KatotoTrickers in the ladies’ section got K100 000 each.

By then, the league was sponsored to the tune of K1 million. Moyale coach Aaron Phiri said they are poised to defend the title.
