MHC to prosecute encroachers—GM

Listen to this article

The Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) says encroachers and illegal buyers of its land will not be treated with kids gloves as the corporation will evict and privately prosecute any offenders.

Newly appointed MHC general manager Wezi Mkandawire told a news conference on Tuesday that the corporation has noted that there are some members of the public who have encroached on MHC land and are illegally selling it.

Mkandawire said the practice is common in areas 18 and 49 in Lilongwe and Soche in Blantyre. She said while the corporation will chase the illegal settlers in Lilongwe, those in Soche will be given a chance to buy the plots from MHC or be evicted as well.

Mkandawire warned the public against being fooled by some traditional leaders who claim to own land in townships. She said such people were relocated and paid compensation a long time ago.

MHC director of administration and corporate services Wellington Kazembe declined to name people he said were using the encroachers as fronts in order to secure the land.
