Mhuju ‘keeper gifts Mzuni title hopes

Mhuju United goalkeeper Thoko Ziphondo on Saturday let in four goals as Mzuzu University enhanced their chances of grabbing the K3 million Northern Region Simama Premier League title.

Mzuni striker Smith Kadawasi claimed a hat-trick while substitute Innocent Mayuni scored the fourth goal to give the students three points that have taken their tally to 61 points from 27 games.

Kadawasi converted from a free-kick in the 31st minute, to put Mzuni in front.

But Mhuju quickly reorganised themselves. Their exchange of passes between Wallen Mwase, Ernest Mkandawire and Chama Msiska saw Benson Mhango grab the equaliser in the 43rd minute.

Thereafter, Mhuju relaxed and were punished as Kadawasi scored two quick goals in the 46th and 58th minutes to make it 3-1.

Mzuni’s new catch Emmably Ng’onga, Majid Msowoya and Sumier Simkonda coordinated well for Mayuni to score the fourth goal.

The students are now three points behind leaders Kabwafu who have 64 points from 29 games.

In another match, Karonga United beat Ekwendeni Hammers 2-0 to go level with Kabwafu.

“We need to be consistent with the wins if we are to play in the top-flight league,” Mzuni chairperson William Maulidi told The Nation.

Mhuju captain Ngwachi Harawa, whose team has 44 points from 28 games, blamed the loss on injury of some of their players.
