Former Cabinet minister and parliamentarian for Chikhwawa Mkombezi Sidik Mia has sued acting secretary general of the People’s Party (PP) Paul Maulidi for defamation.

Mia said this during a press conference held yesterday to clarify matters regarding the allegations that he was distributing money at polling centres on election day.

Mia said: “It was naive for Maulidi to make such claims which are more of character assassination.”

“I never distributed money during the voting process. I am a person who understands electoral laws and cannot stoop so low to do such a thing,” said Mia.

He said he wants Maulidi to pay damages for the act through his lawyers Kalekeni Kaphale and Associates.

“I have served him with the charges through my lawyers. I don’t know what kind of person he is?” wondered Mia.

On Tuesday, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) held a stakeholders briefing in Blantyre where Maulidi publicly brought to the attention of the electoral body allegations that Mia was dishing out money to voters at some polling centres in Chikhwawa.

Before resigning from PP, Mia was vice-president for the South and also minister of Transport and Public Works in President Joyce Banda’s government.
