Transport and Public Infrastructure Minister Sidik Mia has resigned from President Joyce Banda’s Cabinet and from the ruling People’s Party (PP) as vice president for the Southern Region.

Mia, an influential figure in the Lower Shire, announced at a news conference in Blantyre after he tendered his resignation that he arrived at the decision after wide consultations.

And PP says the party has received the news with shock, saying Mia’s resignation was a big blow and a crisis that needs to be addressed.

Mia, who was with President Banda in Thyolo only on Tuesday to inspect some road projects and presided over a graduation ceremony today morning as Transport minister in Blantyre for the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport at College of Medicine, declined to take questions, insisting he will do so at an appropriate time.

“In the interim I ask of you the press to respect my right to privacy as a private citizen whilst I spend this time with my family,” he said

PP Deputy Publicity Secretary Ken Msonda, said Mia’s resignation which also follows that of another PP vice president for the Central Region, Cassim Chilumpha last month, need to jerk the party to investigate what is going wrong.

Msonda said the party was shocked with Mia’s resignation whom he described as a key figure in the party and government.

He described it as a big blow to the party considering that May 20 polls are around the corner and called on the President to intervene.

“How do you lose key people just like that? As a party there is need for us to meet and possibly convince Honourable Mia to rescind his decision after finding out what has happened,” said Msonda.

He said although the party has not been briefed on the reasons behind the resignation, it was clear that things are not well.

“How the party wished Mia could stay in the party”.

Mia has served as a Cabinet minister in UDF, DPP and PP regimes, enjoying political support in the Southern Region, especially the Lower Shire owing to his commitment to developmental projects which he initiates mostly from his personal pocket.

Mia’s resignation follows that of Sam Ganda, an MP from Nsanje and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Jones Chingola, who both left PP in protest following disputes over primary elections.

  1. I am more shocked by PP’s (Msonda’s) reaction than Mia’s departure. I do not support PP but I think their publicity secretary should have done better than this.

    1. There is something that us as ordinary Malawians need to know about what is happening in the PP government, and we hope Mr Mia is going to tell us since he has left the government!!!!!

    2. Msonda has done no wrong. He has said the truth. There is no way a normal person would say “we, in PP are happy with the resignation of Hon Mia” when you are fully aware the guy was just too powerful and influential for the party, more especially for the Lower states. The guy guy was an engine room for PP… Msonda is 100% with what he is saying!

  2. A normal person who can feel ashamed of the cash gate and of full president going about distributing shoes and maize all year round, all her tenure in office can not be happy to be associated with such a dull president. Look at Mia and Chilumpha do you think these learned people can be under the mandasi president. Mia and Chilumpha can contribute effectively if in DPP looking at the DPP’s national agenda. There was security, maize, roads, reshaping of city centre in Lilongwe.
Mia what you have done will give you votes.

    1. BLESSING PHIRI: DPP will never rule Malawi again…never again. People out here have no trust in DPP. These guys, the Chiluphas, Mians are fully aware what DPP is and once they go there that will be their end, they can be Independents(Cassim has done well on that before) or go to MCP.Malawi is not a kingdom. BINGU fooled Malawians, now his young brother. Forget about DPP, Malawians are very clever now, there eyes are open. Better vote MCP, THAN DPP/UDF/PP because its one party.

Man BLESSINGS, I was jus schooling you. Keep well buddy!

      1. Mbewe, I think Phiri is right on, and you are wrong, my man! Phiri’s statement about personal security (rather than lack of it), food security (rather than hunger), infrastructure, including roads (rather than distributing cows) – I have not the time to list everything – stands up to scrutiny. So let’s give credit to DPP, for the good things they achieved for our country. Not wholesale condemnation, sir!

  3. when Chilumpha resigned Wakuda Kamanga said that he was not effective enough regarding his position as the vise president of the party, now the other vice president & minister on that matter resigned, what is your reaction to this mr. wakuda kamanga? was he like chilumpha ? Was it that he was not performing his duties like his counter part ?One thing for sure,, pp is sinking slowly, i hope by the end of the month pp will only have 5 people, kikikikiki, MCP yagwira mseuuuuuuuuu !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dr. Chakwera may 21 bomaaa.

  4. Just in case you didn’t know Mia will be ChaKWERA’S runing mate, so leave this man alone now that you know why he has left PP..

  5. What do you want to mean Mbonga. No sane person can be driven by this unlicensed driver. Driver amaimba hutala ndi pakamwa ndiye mphongo imvekere pipiiiiiiiii. Mphongo imaimba likhweru kapena muluzu osati zomapeta mphalezo ndikuyamwitsa ana

  6. It is very interesting. This news come at a very good and bad time for the PP. I know HER Excellency now is pondering about what is going on in the Party. This is a very good wakeup call for Mayi JB and his PP.

What JB must have in mind is, some of the guys she is keeping and trusting, the likes of Brown Mpinganjira, Hophmarry Makande, Paulo Maulidi just to mention but a few are the ones killing the party. These are bad boys!

JB must now work with Humphrey Mvula very very close in order to turn tables upside down, if she wishes to survive because there is no way here people would vote for PP in few months to come. Plan B is wanted here, and again she must recall Ralph Kasambara, this boy can play magic… its about survival for you mama JB! Its an injury time now for PP… its a DO or DIE here for PP

  7. JB was busy distributing Mia’s Ngombe (cows) from his farm in Chikwawa during her one cow per family foolishness development project, and without paying for them! Mia waona eh, patelera, so he resigns. Ha Ha Ha, JB u r such a cow. Nothing you have done in 2 years, not even a school block or road any of which could have been done in two years. All projects you have opened za Prof Bingu Muthalika including Kapichira 2. Get lost miserable woman, you are a curse and burden to Malawians- delayed salaries, insecurity, theft -cashgate-, increasing cost of leaving- madzi, magets, transport, food daily increasing prices. Go back to selling Mandasi. The only ones who have benefited your children and family members. All the souls of the people who have died in hospitals because of lack of drugs curse you now and forever!!!!!! Leave happily with this if you can!

  8. APM is the only president we are waiting for come 21 may 2014 man. Za Achakwerazo iwalani kaye nthawi yawo sinakwane mwene. ndikunena izi chifukwa mudzakhumudwa man. ife tikudziwa bwino za chakudya.

  9. There is time for everything. Time to reap and time to sow. Time to stay and time to leave. Indeed there’s time to smile and time to weep. The world still remains intact but in all these times rejoice in the Lord God the almighty
