Minister of Transport and Public Infrastructure Sidik Mia has pledged to sponsor a football cup in the Southern Region.

Mia made the pledge on Sunday during finals of his K2.6 million (about $8 666) Saopa Zone Trophy in his Chikhwawa Mkombezi Constituency.

He said the Southern Region has only a league, which makes it less competitive.

“I have noticed that while other regions have knockout cups on top of the leagues, the South has none, so I will sponsor one for the region. I will be meeting the authorities in the region to discuss the logistics,” said Mia.

Southern Region Football Committee (SRFC) chairperson Raphael Humba welcomed the development and said they will meet Mia to discuss the offer.

“We have been struggling to get a sponsor for a cup and we will take up the matter with Mia,” said Humba

The Mia League is played at zonal level and the Sunday finals saw Fodya come from 4-0 down to level the scores and beat Ripcord 9-8 on penalties.

Gift Katawa scored a hat-trick while Vint Ng’onga scored the other goal for Fodya. Mabvuto Innocent scored all the four for Ripcord.

Fodya received K80 000 (about $266) and a trophy whereas Ripcord got K50 000 (about $166).

“We decided to set up zone leagues so that all teams in the constituency have the chance to play in the league which would not have been possible if it was just one league for the whole constituency,” said Mia.
