Mighty Wanderers have bought a 36-seater Toyota Coaster worth over K7 million.

Vice-general secretary Chris Kananji said on Monday that Wanderers expect to save substantially as they were spending K40 000 per day in players’ bus fares when travelling to training sessions.

“We were hiring a coaster and it was expensive. For example, travelling from Blantyre to Lilongwe could cost us K300 000, including fuel expenses. Now, we will just be spending on fuel. However, our other challenge is for us to own a ground,” said Kananji.

Kananji, who fetched the bus in Tanzania a few days ago, was optimistic that they would be able to keep the bus going using gate collections.

“Buying the bus should surely be a source of motivation. We will be travelling comfortably nowadays,” said Kananji.

The Nomads used part of the K25 million donation from former president Joyce Banda to buy the bus and are now exploring income-generating activities.

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has since rejected the Nomads SMS promotion proposal whose prizes were to include a minibus and television sets, citing potential breach of contract with league sponsors, TNM. The proposal was to involve subscribers of Airtel who are TNM rivals.

Nomads rivals, Bullets, also have a bus bought some years ago. On the pitch, Bullets lead the Super League log table on 27 points whereas Wanderers are bottom on seven points. Both teams do not have sponsorship.
