Milk exports boost Dairibord revenue

Dairibord Malawi says milk and milk products exports to Zimbabwe accounted for about 26 percent of its revenue in 2011.

Dairibord managing director Theodora Nyamandi in response to a questionnaire said the company started exporting milk and milk products to Zimbabwe since 2009 and the exports have been rising every year.

Nyamandi said the future for Malawi milk is bright on the international market.

“The quantities we send outside differ from time to time, but there is hope to increase our raw milk supply to capture other regional markets,” she said.

She, however, expressed the need to civic educate Malawians to consume more milk and milk products, saying the country’s per capita consumption of 6 litres per person per year is way below the 200 litres recommended by World Health Organisation.

She said Malawi can become a major export of milk and milk products if it improves its quality and quantity of its milk.

The company recruited seven people following its decision to start exporting milk to Zimbabwe.

Dairibord is a market leader in the dairy, foods and beverages industry in Malawi.
