Milonde, Malindi by-elections materials inspection Monday

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is expected to inspect polling materials for Milonde Ward in Mulanje South East Constituency and Malindi Ward in Mangochi North East Constituency on Monday.

The by-elections, which are slated for Tuesday in the two wards, follow the deaths of the incumbents John Saidi Macollera of Malindi Ward, who died on December 1 2017 and Felix Majawa, who died on December 12 the same year.

In Malindi Ward, four candidates that are expected to face each other include People’s Party  (PP) aspirant Hassan Chikuta, Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) Ambrose Benford Hamisi, United Democratic Front’s (UDF) Kassim Abiewa Limamu and George Mayamiko Chiwaula, who is an independent candidate.

However, Milonde Ward has five candidates that include Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) Mike Skinner, Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) Donata Nyanga and three independent candidates; Mavuto Lackson Michael, Leo Roy Pangani and Cidreck Dickies Somanje.

According to an update from MEC, candidates started their campaign on March 13 and are expected to end on Sunday.

“As per requirement of the law, campaign shall end at 6am on April 8 2018. Any campaigning after this period is illegal and the commission will not hesitate to take necessary measures against those who indulge in such violations,” reads in part the update.

According to MEC, vote counting will start immediately after polling at polling centres.
