Malawi Institute of Management (MIM) has asked chief executive officers (CEOs) and other top officials from various organisations to strive to acquire knowledge to boost their potential.

MIM board chairperson Lewis Dzimbiri said this on Friday at The Makokola Retreat in Mangochi on the sidelines of the CEOs retreat aimed at enhancing their competences, skills and knowledge.

In an interview, he said CEOs are a driving force of the country’s economy and there is need for them to acquire knowledge and leadership skills.

Said Dzimbiri: “Knowledge or human capital is one of the most valuable components of any organisation. This is why investment in human resource becomes a necessary step in ensuring that a business prospers.

“With the implementation of Malawi 2063, CEOs or top officials need to undergo a systematic process of leadership training to transform them into good leaders.”

He urged the CEOs to align their programmes towards Malawi 2063, the country’s long-term development plan.

“We can only get positive results for Malawi 2063 if leaders from various sectors are able to lead according to requirements of good leadership,” said Dzimbiri.

He said the retreat was aimed at giving an opportunity to leaders to meet and share their ideas and experiences for the betterment of their organisations and the country.

One of the participants, George Kainja, who is the Inspector General of Police, said the gathering was critical because ideas and experiences they have shared will go a long way in transforming their thinking capabilities.

“As a police chief, I had some leadership gaps before the training. But after sitting together with my colleagues, I have learnt so many things which will enable me to execute my duties effectively in line with Malawi 2063,” he said.

The two-day retreat drew 30 participants from public and private institutions such as Malawi Police Service, Old Mutual Malawi, UbuntuNet Alliance, Mike Appel and Gatto, Presscane Limited, Illovo Sugar (Malawi) plc, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, Malawi Bureau of Standards and Mzuzu City Council.
