Minister commends Escom for innovative reforms

Minister responsible for Natural Resources Energy and Mining Atupele Muluzi has commended the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) for its current efforts aimed at improving the energy sector and power generation in the country.

Atupele said this on Monday in Neno at Nkula hydroelectric power station when he made tour at the power station to see the ongoing initiatives and works carried out by Escom at the station.

Escom_plantHe said the energy sector is one of the sectors that is vital for economic development of the country with regard to this it is vital to follow up and see developments happening in such sectors and encourage and motivate the players.

“We appreciate the wonderful initiatives that Escom has currently put in place to ensure the smooth running of the corporation and provision of service”

“It is encouraging to see that Escom has under taken a number of measures of ensure that there are of number of reforms for the benefit of the people of Malawi. We have seen the service charter that is yet to be implemented which will surely benefit the people of Malawi” he said.

He said his ministry will ensure to improve power generation in parts of the country and allow the corporation to operate freely without much interference of the government to maximise its potential.

Escom chief executive officer John Kandulu said the visit will help the organisation as one of the key players in the energy sector to improve its operations and do more in the sector.

“We have in the past year been involved in a number of reforms and to have such kind of visit to appreciate our efforts and work is a motivating factor for us do perform with excellence and do more,” he said.
