Minister of Civic Education, Culture and Community Development Cecilia Chazama has commended chiefs in Nkhotakota for playing an important role in mobilising communities to register in the ongoing National Registration Programme.

Speaking when she visited some of the registration centres in the district on Wednesday, Chazama said she was impressed with the turnout.

Chazama: This needs to be encouraged

“I am reliably informed that chiefs have taken up that task of civic-educating and convincing people to register. This is a good development which needs to be encouraged in all the districts,” she said.

Chazama also said it was pleasing to note that the registration process was going on well in the district.

Nkhotakota district commissioner Felix Mkandawire commended government for implementing what he described as a “thing I never thought would materialise”.

He said: “We have been hearing that Malawi was the only country in Sadc [Southern African Development Community] region that had no national identity cards. This is really a good development.”

Mkandawire also commended National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust for timely civic education which helped the people to understand  the importance of the exercise. n
