Minister of Information, Civic Education and Communications Technology Mark Botomani has called on Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) management to avoid getting involved in politics.

The minister was speaking on Tuesday after touring Macra head office at Ginnery Corner in Blantyre as part of his familiarisation tour.

Itaye (L) listens to Botomani (R) during the tour yesterday.

Botomani, who was accompanied by the ministry’s Principal Secretary Esmie Kainja and other officials, said it is important that management of such institutions remain professional .

He said: “I was impressing upon members of staff, particularly the management, to say they must ensure that they are not interfering in political issues. They should leave politics to politicians like myself.”

Macra director general Godfrey Itaye in a separate interview said the institution ensures that employees adhere to work ethics and execute duties in a professional manner.

“We don’t do politics in this institution, suffice to say we serve the government of the day,” he said.

Some of the issues discussed during the tour include government plans to construct more towers for network efficiency and construction of more telecentres.
