He said: “We came here to monitor progress and also to collect information for planning purposes and let me say that I am very impressed with the work that is going on and the contractor has assured us that come July 2016 the work will be complete.”

He said the main purpose of the institution is to produce science teachers for secondary schools. He disclosed that Nalikule TTC will have two-thirds science teacher intake and one-third other programmes, which is expected to ease the shortage of science teachers in the country.

In his remarks, Jica project formulation adviser in education Norihide Furukawa said despite some procurement challenges, 80 percent of the work has been completed since the work started in April 2014.

“We are more than half way through and we hope to finish the work by July 2016,” said Furukawa, adding that 13 million Japanese yen, approximately $15 million (about K8.7 billion) was the total budget for the completion of the construction works.

According to MoEST officials, Nalikule TTC is expected to have three programmes or faculties namely; Science, Language and Social Studies.

Nalikule TTC is designed to cater for 720 students and is being constructed by Delta Construction Company.

The college lies on 29 hectares and among other structures, it comprises 26 staff houses, four laboratories, two multipurpose halls, one resource center, a library, two office administration blocks, classroom blocks, lecture rooms, male and female hostels and an open lecture theatre. n
