The Ministry of Disability and Elderly Affairs says capacity building for district councils is essential in promoting and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities in the country.

Speaking in Mangochi, where the ministry organised a three-day capacity building and knowledge training workshop for district officials, the senior deputy Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Disability and Elderly Affairs, Chikumbutso Mtumodzi, said district planning needs to include the Disability Act 2012.

The training will ensure that district councils understand disability, and have the technical capacity to develop disability inclusive district development plans.

“The training has been organised to build their capacities and knowledge on how to effectively plan and implement disability inclusive services, projects and activities of government at district, area, and community levels,” he said.

In his remarks, CBM country representative in Malawi, a key partner with the ministry, Stefan Dofel, said: “Within the decentralised government structure of Malawi, the training of district councils in disability mainstreaming is of utmost importance.
