Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Resources and the Malawi Police Service (MPS) are meeting in Lilongwe to strategise on how to curb corruption in the Farm Input Subsidy Programme (Fisp).

The brainstorming session, attended by 200 police personnel, is be     ing facilitated by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) with funding from the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Resources.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, senior deputy commissioner of police Stan Kaliza observed that despite the vast experience in the implementation and knowledge of the main problems facing Fisp, the police, ACB and Ministry of Agriculture have not been able to effectively stump out some of the common malpractices

He said: “This [failure] has been due to a myriad of factors that are criminal, political, social, economical and technological in nature. As MPS, we believe that prevention of malpractices and abuses is better and saves more resources than investigation and prosecution of cases.”

Kaliza told participants that MPS does not want a repeat of the previous mistakes, which saw government losing K470 million in Fisp.

Coordinator for security for Fisp, Inspector Gorge Pindani, said the workshop has come at the right time as the second and last phase of the distribution process of Fisp products is underway.
