Ministry of Education, with support from Unicef Switzerland, plans to train 2 000 teachers in Chiradzulu under the Malawi Teacher Effectiveness Enhancement Project.

Ministry of Education teacher development deputy director Rose Kalizang’oma said this on Friday when briefing District Executive Committee members on the initiative.

“The district has 12 percent and 35 percent primary and secondary school teachers, respectively who are unqualified which is the highest compared to other districts,” she said.

Kalizang’oma said the initiative will be implemented by Chiradzulu Teachers Training College (TTC) and the district’s eight Teachers Development Centres (TDCs).

She, however, urged DEC members to visit the TTC to monitor and appreciate what is on the ground concerning the three-year initiative.

Chiradzulu district education manager Allan Machemba thanked government for considering the district to be the first beneficiary of the project.

He also said the district has more male teachers than female teachers as most female teachers prefer working in urban areas.

“So, I ask the ministry to deploy more female teachers to the district,” said Machemba.
