Ministry urges farmers to diversify crops

The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development has advised farmers in the country to plant roots and tubers, especially for sweet potatoes and cassava in addition to the maize.

The ministry has made the advice in a press release on mitigation measures to combat negative effects of the 2014/15 rainfall pattern, which may affect production while some parts have received normal rains, other parts are receiving erratic rains.

Alimi_soya_farmers“Farmers that are yet to plant maize are being encouraged to plant early maturing varieties. Sorghum and Millet should also be considered in areas that these crops do well,” reads the release signed by the ministry’s secretary Erica Maganga.

The ministry said farmers should use water harvesting technologies such as box ridges, Swales and check dams to conserve moisture. n
