However, the event, which was billed to start at 6pm rolled into action late at 9:30 pm.

Enthusiastic fans, characterised by University of Malawi students, witnessed the emotional crowing of a 21-year-old Polytechnic student Chisomo Machelo as the new queen for Blantyre.

Vanessa Chiutsi, another Polytechnic student, Tunosiwe Mwakalinga, were declared first and second princesses.

Judges Gladys Kumbatira, Jones Kumwenda and Annie Ganiza were convinced with the intelligence of the girls before declaring them winners.

From the word go, the two Polytechnic students enjoyed massive support from a cross-section of fans and the venue proved to be their home ground since College of Medicine happens to be a constituent college of University of Malawi. Former Miss Blantyre Nerani Nthara relinquished the crown to Machelo.

Machelo went away with a grand prize of car donated by Yanga.co whose keys were given to her right on stage. She also automatically became the ambassador for the ‘Keep Blantyre Clean’ sanitation drive and Yanga.co’s Green & Online Education platforms.

In her acceptance speech, Machelo promised to work hand-in-hand with companies to contribute towards cleanliness of Blantyre city and social and economic status of vulnerable groups through charity programmes.

She, however, appealed for more corporate support in order to achieve the objectives of her office.
