“I decided to spend the day with children who are here at Dzaleka camp as you know life is tough at such places with hardly enough to eat. I was inspired to come to Dzaleka by people who grew up here like Dr Mirreile Twaigila and Mercy who come from Dzaleka camp,” said Khofi.

She said as the country’s beauty queen and a role model for young people, she wanted to set an example on giving and sharing.

“So I sourced finances and prepared lunch for over 60 children at the camp. We shared the birthday cake and danced together. It felt good to see the smiles on their faces,” said Khofi.

She added that the highlight of her birthday celebration was when her hosts offered her roasted fresh maize as her birthday present.

“They do not have much but they managed to offer me a hot piece of roasted fresh maise as my gift. It’s the thought that count and I was very happy with it,” she disclosed.

Speaking after the event, one of the residents at the camp commonly known as  Shalex, thanked the beauty queen for her gesture saying food is difficult to find at the camp  and that her gesture made the children feel loved and cared for.

“You are the first Miss Malawi to visit us here and the children are very happy,” said Shalex in an interview monitored on Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS).

Among other things, during the event, the beauty queen was taken around the camp, treated to dances and poem recitals from the children before the lunch which ended up with sharing of the birthday cake.
