The Miss Malawi United Kingdom (UK) beauty pageant has widened its scope by adopting some orphans in Lilongwe, a development that will see the organisers pay for the orphans’ education.

Miss Malawi UK organiser Kondi Munthali said apart from committing to pay for the orphans’ fees, the organisers will also motivate them to go further with their school.

Said Munthali: “The girls were chosen by Abundant Life Centre, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Mitundu as beneficiaries of the educational sponsorship for one year, which the Miss Malawi UK office is providing. We are committed to fully support the orphans with all their educational needs financially and materially.

“In this instance we have already paid their school fees amounting to K120 000 for the whole year apart from providing them with school bags, bathing and washing soap and writing materials. We are in the process of sponsoring eight more girls to make our total sponsorship to 18 girls for a year.”

As one way of motivating them, the girls were treated to a lunch last weekend.

“Most of them have never been outside their village so I saw it fit to show them a life that exists outside what they are accustomed to and if they work hard in school they will be able to live this lifestyle.

“I want to bring to the UK one academically outstanding girl for a holiday. I will be monitoring their progress and liaise with their school to see who is doing well. That should be during the 2016 show and she will be the guest of honour,”

  1. Why girls only? If you are a miss Malawi I thought you are representing all Malawians and not only girls. Are you saying if I am Mr Malawi in UK I should only support boys even though some men had voted for me? This is not right at all
