Hip hop star Tay Grin will not be the only Malawian representative at this year’s Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Arts (Beffta) Awards as Rose M’mangisa and Alexina Phiri have also been nominated.

M’mangisa, who is the current Miss Malawi UK title holder, has been nominated for a Beffta Award under the Best Beauty Queen category while Alexina Phiri, who is the former Miss Malawi UK, has been nominated for Best Former Beauty Queen.

The awards, which fall under Best International African Act category, will be presented at Hippodrome London on October 24.

Information sourced on the Beffta website indicates that artists from the US, Africa, Canada, UK, the Caribbean and Europe are expected to turn up for the awards ceremony.

In an e-mail correspondence, Phiri, who is a trained lawyer, said she is pleased with the nomination for such a top international award as it proves the potential of Malawian artists.

“This is a great honour to me as an artist and to the nation as a whole. I know for sure that the recognition will put Malawi on the map,” said Phiri.

She then called on Malawians in the country and abroad to rally behind them.

“My plea is that we should join hands so as to obtain the awards. There is need for people to vote so that we should broaden the chances of earning these top international annual awards,” she said.

Tay Grin, who has received two nominations, has also been lined up to perform at the event.

The hip hop artist was nominated for Best International African Act and Best Music Video for his new song The Beach.

Beffta Awards were created to honour and celebrate talented personalities in entertainment, filming, television and arts.
