Mituka: It was better during the last tenure

The battle for positions in the Musicians Association of Malawi (MAM) executive committee ahead of its polls has begun with the women’s desk launching a 50-50 campaign to ensure there are women in the committee.

MAM will elect new office bearers during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for July, and time is running fast for the Women desk which is headed by Martha Mituka, to influence musicians to usher women into the executive committee.

There are currently no women in the committee, a development Mituka said affects women’s participation in the association.

“It is sad that we don’t have any woman in the executive committee. It was better during the last tenure because we had a female. As Women’s Desk, we want to ensure we coax women to participate in the elections and make sure there are women,” she said.

She added that it will be difficult to achieve 50-50 representation, but said the campaign is an on-going programme whose objective is to see more women playing crucial roles in the promotion of music.
