mituka | The Nation OnlineThe newly elected Musicians Association of Malawi (Mam) president for women’s desk Martha Mituka has vowed to spend the good part of her office time on improving the welfare of female musicians in the country. Mituka revealed this in an interview when commenting on what priorities she has taken to her new office.

Mituka took over the office two months ago from Eliza Kachali Kaunda who has also demonstrated success during her office tenure. She says most female artists in the country are failing to make progress in their careers because of financial problems and says her office wants to make sure that all female artists have access to financial support to help them record and release their albums.

“We have seen artists failing to record their music because they have no money, others have albums but they cannot put them on the market. This should not be the case at a time when we are dreaming to soar high in music in the country. Mam is this time coming to solve this and give all female artists a good platform to help them record and release their music without difficulties, “said Mituka.

Asked on how this would be done, Mituka said her office is just waiting for its annual funding and once the sum is released, they will roll out female artist’s music concerts across the country. Cash raised from the concerts will be kept in a special account and all active female musicians and those struggling to record and release their music will have a chance to borrow from there.

“This will be like a revolving fund, musicians will borrow today and when they pay back others will also have a chance to borrow the same money and in that way our account will remain active and no one will complain of not having money to release their music provided they are serious musicians and really need the help, “says Mituka while pointing out that the package will also benefit a lot budding artists.

The president also said her office is making efforts to acquire full musical instruments to be used by all female artists during their music shows on cheap costs.Transparency is a new thing Mituka has brought to the office. The versatile woman says she is planning to meet Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) television station bosses to ask for a 30 minute program on TV where they will be describing about programs they are running so that everyone is able to follow the proceedings of the initiative. The women’s desk was established to cater to all women musicians in the country regardless of genre.
