Mkanda’s team to face Kaizer Chiefs
Zicco Mkanda’s Mozambican side Liga Muculmana are relishing the prospect of a CAF Champions League first-round tie with Kaizer Chiefs on March 1 in South Africa.
Muculmana president Rafik Sidat told www.KickOff.com that the venue of the match at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium is ideal for his charges.
“Playing in Durban suits us well because it is a coastal town just like Maputo. So, we will just drive from Maputoon Thursday next week straight to Durban instead of going through Johannesburg,” Sidat told the South African magazine on Monday.
Sidat added that they are also likely to shift the return leg a week later from their traditional home ground at Estadio Da Liga Muculmana in Matola, which has a capacity of just 5 000, to the 42 000-seater Estadio Do Zimpeto.
The winner of the two legs will meet either Dynamos [from Zimbabwe] or AS Vita [DR Congo] in the last qualifying round before the group stages of the CAF competition.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Joseph Kamwendo is also assured of Champions League football after his side was drawn in the first round against Astres De Doula of Senegal. Mazembe will start the campaign away.
In Zimbabwe, the press has predicted good things for Caps United’s new hot signing Ishmael Thindwa after his goals earned the Harare giants the inaugural Zimbabwe Soccer Challenge Cup last weekend.
“He is a gunslinger who has scored half-a-century goals, in just three seasons at a modest Malawian Super League side and, a decade after his compatriot Joseph Kamwendo helped Caps United become champions, Ishmael Thindwa is here hoping to make the same impression,” wrote The Herald newspaper on Wednesday.
