The elite eight in the Mo626 College Basketball are now complete following play-offs held in Mzuzu on Saturday involving teams from Eastern and Northern zones.

In the men’s category, Chancellor College (Chanco) Hawks and DMI, both from the Eastern Zone, qualified in the men’s four-team event after finishing first and second, respectively

In the ladies’ section, Zima and University of Livingstonia (Unilia) also winged into the last eight.

Chanco won both their games against Unilia 73-26 and DMI 36-19 in the finals.

Chanco Hawks captain Chikondi Sato said they are delighted at qualifying for the elite eight, a statement to teams to watch out for the Hawks.

“We wanted to play with a statement that we are here to win and not just to participate like last year.

“The qualification gives us the necessary boost ahead of the elite eight event,” he said.

In another game, DMI beat Mzuzu University 59-56 in a contest that sealed the former’s runner-up slot.

Mzuni captain Ntchindi Munthali said: “The match against DMI was the decider. We led in three quarters, but gave it away in the last two minutes of the last quarter.

“We gave out our best, but I guess it’s part of the game.”

In ladies’ category, Zima came tops after seeing-off Mzuni 46-33 and Unilia 26-18. In another game, Unilia beat Chanco 41-38.
