Mob kills man, ransack property
An angry mob at Mzambazi Trading Centre in Mzimba on Tuesday beat to death Sebastian Nkhata, 35, for allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend’s lover.
Mzimba Police Station deputy spokesperson John Nyirongo said the deceased and his friends went to Mzambazi where a quarrel broke out between him and a Mr Masamba who is alleged to be a lover to Nkhata’s ex-girlfriend.
He said: “In the course of the quarrel, Nkhata stabbed Mr. Masamba, who runs a tailoring shop, with a knife. This angered the onlookers at the trading centre who reacted by assaulting Nkhata.
“He was taken to Mzambazi Mission Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Upon receipt of news of his death, people from his home village mobilised and looted shops at Mzambazi Trading Centre.”
He said investigations are underway to arrest the perpetrators and establish the value of the looted property.
Police are advising members of the community to refrain from mob justice as the law will take its full course on any pepetrators.
Nkhata hailed from Nkhweta Village in Traditional Authority Chindi in Mzimba.
