Limbe Police Station deputy spokesperson Pedzisai Zembeneko said in an interview the alleged criminals were part of a gang that went to a bar in the township around 3am and stole, among other things, an amplifier, bottles of beer and K37 000 ($64.44) cash.

He said: “It was on their way back to Namame, in Soche-Manje [area], that they met a group of people who suspected them of having stolen the items.

“Some gang members run away, but the three were caught and beaten mercilessly. Two died on the spot and one died as police were taking him to the hospital.”

Zembeneko said police are yet to locate their relations as the trio’s identities are not known.

“We are appealing to those whose relations have been missing since Tuesday to go to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital [QECH] mortuary to see if they are among the three,” he said.

The police have also urged with the public to avoid taking the law into their hands by executing mob justice as it derails investigations.
