MOC to introduce Malawi Mini Olympics

The Malawi Olympic Committee has announced that it will introduce the Malawi Mini Olympic Games towards the end of the year.

MOC president Oscar Kanjala said this during the launch of the association’s strategic plan in Lilongwe last Friday.

He said the games are aimed at giving local athletes a feel of what Olympic Games are all about.

“We normally just send four athletes to Olympics on solidarity as we fail to qualify and one thing we have noted is that there is no will power from the athletes to qualify because they don’t understand Olympics.

“Companies, sports federations and the nation in general have also not appreciated the Olympic movement because they don’t have a proper picture.

“So, having one for Malawi will give all stakeholders a feel of Olympics and they will be able to give their support in our quest to qualify for 2016 Olympics,” said Kanjala.

He said they would include at least two team sports events and several individual sports competitions.

“It will be held in the last quarter of the year and the technical committee will work on modalities.

“But one thing for sure is that we will have it,” said Kanjala.

Malawi has never produced a qualified athlete for Olympics.
