Moliati, Makawa snatch title belts

Salimu Chazama and Limbani Masamba surrendered their belts after losing to their challengers on Sunday at Lilongwe Community ground.

After two attempts, Chrispin Moliati finally wrestled the national lightweight belt from fellow Malawi Defence Force (MDF) boxer Chazama through a unanimous decision.

Chikondi Makawa underlined his credentials as one of the country’s top boxers when he snatched the superweight national title from holder Masamba on a split decision.

Moliati dominated all the rounds displaying his ‘jab, jab jab and duck’ technique.

Chazama, who was always on the charge and throwing wild punches, had his guard down exposing his face.

Moliati exploited this weakness by landing heavy jabs in all the rounds.

It was a professional display by Moliati who was cheered on by the huge crowd.

Chazama, though strong and aggressive in the ring, failed to land accurate punches.

“I had no doubt about today’s victory. I prepared well. Last time I thought I won the fight and the judges robbed me. Today I wanted to prove to the people that I am the best,” said Moliati

Chazama, while accepting defeat, expressed surprise at Moliati’s energy levels.

“I am suspicious the way he fought. It was not normal,” he said.

Renowned Zimbabwean trainer Clyde Musonda of Delta Force Boxing Academy praised Moliati by describing him as “exceptional.”

“You have talented boxers in this country. We watched some good boxing today, but I must say Moliati was exceptional,” said Musonda.

The main supporting bout was another entertaining affair as Makawa kept fans on their toes to stun Masamba on a split decision.

Ruth Chisale again reigned supreme against Anisha Bashiri.
