Moment of truth in Muleso-Mphande Chess

The moment of truth has finally arrived in the Muleso-Mphande Central Region Chess League (CRCL) Open Championship as the contest winds up today at Simama Hotel in Lilongwe.

For sure, a breeze of silence will engulf the chess room as at least 50 contestants will be cracking their brains in their quest to outsmart their opponents on the chess-board and earn K100 000 first-prize plus an all-paid-for trip to South Africa for an international competition.

CRCL chairperson Khama Chindole confirmed yesterday that the league, which has just returned from a long spell of sponsorship drought, will finally crown as a champion today after three days of rattling battles.

“Household names such as Fide Master Gerald Mphungu and Candidate Masters Alfred Chimthere, Petros Mfune and Chiletso Chipanga are all aware of the great value of the competition,” Chindole said.

The Muleso-Mphande Championship has been sponsored to the tune of K600 000 by Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) executive member Mayeso Mphande and South Africa-based business person Francis Muleso.
