Data collected by Machinga District election clerks shows that more women than men are turning up to register in their respective registration centres.

Samples from data collected during the first five days reveal that many men are not registering to vote in the 2014 Tripartite Elections in the district.

For instance, in Machinga East Constituency, at Chisuse School, 409 women registered in the first five days against 209 men while at another centre at Nyenje Trading Centre, 496 women got registered against 298 men.

In Machinga Central Constituency, 318 women were registered at Nsanama School compared to 212 men while at Katundu School, in the same constituency, only 192 men registered against 250 women.

In Machinga North East, at Maweha School, 400 ladies registered against 283 men, while at Unangu School, 477 females registered against 423 men.

Machinga district commissioner Stuart Ngoka has described the high turnout of women at the registration centres as impressive.

Ngoka, who together with the district’s electoral supervisory team has been visiting the centres since Wednesday last week, says he is very encouraged by the development.
