The Moroccan king says he is determined to work with President Mutharika’s administration to give impetus to relations of African brotherhood and solidarity.

On his part, Pohamba says in the statement: “On behalf of the government and the people of the Republic of Namibia, and indeed on my own behalf, I wish to extend warm congratulations to Your Excellency on your election as the President of the Republic of Malawi during the tripartite elections held in your country on May 20 2014.”

He says he is looking forward to working with Mutharika in his (Pohamba) capacity as the chairperson of the Southern Africa Development Community (Sadc) organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.

Malawi is currently the chair of the Sadc.

The Nigerian president — a close ally of Malawi’s former president Joyce Banda — applauded Mutharika’s “statesman-like extension of hands of fellowship to his predecessor and other leaders of the Malawian opposition in the aftermath of his election.”

Jonathan says he expects the two countries’ cordial and mutually-beneficial relations that have blossomed in the recent years will continue to grow under Mutharika’s leadership.
