The Rotary Club of Mzuzu on Friday inducted social and political activist Moses Mkandawire as its new president.

Speaking during the induction dinner, Mkandawire said his committee will continue pursuing the club’s goals to address health, education, water and sanitation and conflict resolution issues.

“I don’t think that I will bring any new issues to the club because I believe in working as a team. It is the team that will drive the agenda. What we will do is to continue where our president left and support each other,” he said.

Immediate past president Susan Gwamba described her term in office as fulfilling, saying she reached out to the younger generation to embrace the spirit of community work.

“It was a tasking job because very few young people are interested in serving the community. But we thought it wise that we could start with the younger ones who are in secondary school.

“We taught them about Rotary and helped them to appreciate helping the community. We approached several schools and we are happy to report that Marymount Secondary School is certified as a club and has 85 members,” she said.

The Rotary Club of Mzuzu was established in 2002 and has 22 members.

The club seeks to encourage and foster the ideals of service as a basis of enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. n
