Construction giant Mota Engil yesterday aided the Musicians Association of Malawi (MAM) with a K1million (US$2 392) injection towards the MAM Awards scheduled for Bingu International Conference Centre tonight.

Mota Engil’s support comes a day after Airtel Malawi pumped in K5 million (US$11 961) for the awards, which have also got a prop-up from AXA and MBC.

As we went to press, MobTech was meeting MAM to donate K100 000 (US$239) towards the event.

In an interview, MAM president Chimwemwe Mhango confirmed receiving the donation  from Mota Engil and said the money will help them to pay for some services to make the event a success.

“I am glad to confirm MAM has received a K1 million donation from Mota Engil and K100 000 from MobTech. We are happy that the companies have come to our rescue despite approaching them on a short notice. The money will be used to ensure the winners and participants enjoy the night,” said Mhango, adding that they have hired coaches to transport artists outside Lilongwe to the event.

Meanwhile, MAM has disclosed that its membership has doubled owing to the awards.

“I am happy to say the awards have brought unity among musicians and improved membership. There is cooperation from all artists and many outside the nominated lists have confirmed to attend the event. Our membership has increased and the reason is that the nominated artists were supposed to register with MAM as members to be eligible. I believe this is a good start for our quest to work as a team in 2014,” said Mhango.
